In early February 2020, Kristina Großmann and her research team conducted a participatory Workshop in Murung Raya, the utmost Northern District of Central Kalimantan that belongs to the Indonesian part of the Island of Borneo. The area is rich in natural resources such as wood, coal and gold and their exploitation have left marks on the environment and communities in the region. The podcast summarizes and reports on the recent workshop “Murung Raya (District) in the Year 2030 – Mining, social justice and sustainability” and its results. More than 60 representatives from local villages, NGOs, the mining company PT Adaro, different universities as well as local government representatives came together to discuss the future and the current situation of the District of Murung Raya. The workshop was organized within the project FuturEN funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and aimed to function as a vehicle in order to connect different stakeholders on the topic of environmental change and coal mining in Indonesia.
