On June 18, 2016, the Indonesian artist and visiting professor at the University of Passau Arahmaiani Feisal hosted a ,Flag Walk' performance in Berlin.
This performance took place as part of the exhibition ,Die Kunst war schon in der Kirche-Über Readymades' where the artist still is presenting her work , I love You ' until August 6, 2016. Accompanied by her students, Professor Rüdiger Korff and members of the Indonesian community in Berlin the group walked from Berliner Dom St. Marien on the Alexanderplatz to the Church St. Michael on Engelbecken while waving flags.
In 2006 she created the Flag Project as a mean of encouraging dialogue and re-building community. In a series of community-based performances different key words have been inscribed on flags and waved about in public spaces. This work started with one flag of Iani's design with the Arabic-derived Indonesian word "akal "- meaning 'sense' or 'cunning'. Working with community groups in Australia, Europe and Asia she has created dozens of flags. Spaces include Sydney's Hyde Park and a park next to Borobudur. The Flag Project is designed to create and maintain a network that enables the exchange of ideas and experiences and to study and implement collective creativity.
As visiting professor at the University of Passau, Arahmaiani offers students the opportunity to be a part of her flag project in her seminars.
