"Social Learning Videos - A transdisciplinary method to find and enhance solutions to societal problems"
During her stay in Germany as guest lecturer Dr. Patricia Fry held the block course "Social Learning Videos." The course analysed the different views of science and practice (different thought collectives), the importance of including tacit knowledge and introduced the method "Social Learning Videos". The method consists of several steps starting with framing the societal problem to be solved, analysing actor groups for the academic, private and public sector as well as civil society, choosing types of stakeholders and building a multi stakeholder discussion group. Special emphasis is given on fostering an exchange on the same level.
Dr. Patrica Fry was very impressed with the societal problems the students chose for their case studies! The topics reached from obesity in the USA, coffee growers in Colombia, dying bees in Germany and genital mutalization in Tanzania. The students discussed such good project concepts that she wished to implement them!
Feedback:
"I realized that people from science and practice have different understandings on a topic. I liked the audio visual component of the lecture."
"I specially liked the videos. The method worked also with a broader topic. I wonder how science has to change in order to enable such project developments within the university."
